All Intermatic Occupancy/Vacancy Wall Sensors (PIR, Ultrasonic, and Dual-Technology models)
Question / Problem
Do Intermatic occupancy or vacancy sensors provide dimming control or support dimming functions?
Safety Warning
Warning: Always turn off power at the circuit breaker before installing or servicing sensors or lighting control equipment. Installation must comply with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical regulations.
Product Capabilities
Standard Intermatic occupancy and vacancy sensors are ON/OFF only devices. They do not include dimming functionality.
However, the occupancy and vacancy sensors included in our ARISTA® Advanced Lighting Control System are dimming-capable. All other Intermatic wall sensors operate strictly as ON/OFF switching controls.
To integrate dimming functionality with standard Intermatic sensors, a separate dimmer must be installed downstream of the sensor. For proper installation, the dimmer must:
- Be compatible with the light fixture type
- Support electronic switching loads, if used with LEDs or ballasts
The dimmer must also be wired after the sensor. Installing a dimmer upstream (line → dimmer → sensor → load) can cause improper operation or damage.
Note: If sensor-based dimming is required, installers should choose to install the ARISTA® Advanced Lighting Control System or another dedicated dimming-sensor platform.
Tips / Additional Notes
- Standard Intermatic occupancy and vacancy sensors do not support dimming functionality.
- Fixture and dimmer compatibility must be verified to avoid flicker or reduced performance.
- Choose ARISTA® solutions for commercial applications where sensor-based dimming is required.
