Applies To
All Intermatic occupancy and vacancy wall sensors, including PIR, ultrasonic, and dual-technology models
Question / Problem
Can an Intermatic occupancy or vacancy sensor detect motion through a glass door, window, or partition?
Product Details and Use
Intermatic occupancy and vacancy sensors cannot detect motion through glass or plastic barriers. PIR sensors do not sense infrared changes through glass, and ultrasonic signals reflect off glass surfaces instead of passing through them. Because neither technology can penetrate transparent or translucent barriers, movement in an adjacent room or hallway separated by glass will not activate the sensor.
When detection is required on both sides of a glass or plastic partition, a separate sensor must be installed in each area.
Tips / Additional Notes
- Sensors require a clear line of sight within the same room or area for proper detection.
- Use one sensor per enclosed or partially divided area for consistent and reliable coverage.
