Applies To
Traditional-style heat pumps equipped with a three-button control board (SET, UP, DOWN).
Question / Problem
How do I connect a remote system to a heat pump with a three-button control board?
Safety Warning
Warning: Only qualified personnel should install or service pool heating and automation equipment. Always turn off power to the heat pump and the remote system before working on any wiring.
Common Installation / Application Conditions
- The heat pump uses a three-button controller (SET, UP, DOWN).
- An external automation or remote system will control heating operation.
- Verify whether the automation system uses two-wire or three-wire control.
- All wiring must be low-voltage (18 AWG minimum) and comply with local codes.
- Always remove power from all equipment before wiring.
Step-by-Step Resolution
Select the connection type that applies to your remote system.
Option 1: Two-Wire Remote Systems
Note: These systems have their own thermostat and do not use the thermostat inside the heat pump.
Turn Off the Pool Temperature Setting
Press SET once to display POL. Use the DOWN arrow until OFF appears.
Set the Spa Temperature to Maximum
Press SET twice until SPA appears, then raise the temperature to 104° F.
Confirm the Heat Pump Is in Pool Mode
The POL indicator must be lit. If SPA is active, press SET until POL appears.
Wire the Two-Wire Remote to the P/S Terminals
Turn off power. Connect the two dry-contact wires from the remote controller to the heat pump P and S terminals.
Option 2: Three-Wire Remote Systems
Note: These systems use the thermostat inside the heat pump. The remote system switches between pool and spa modes.
Set the Pool Temperature
Press SET once to display POL, then set the desired temperature.
Set the Spa Temperature
Press SET twice to display SPA, then set the desired spa temperature.
Confirm the Heat Pump Is in Pool Mode
The POL indicator must be lit. If SPA is active, press SET until POL appears.
Wire the Three-Wire Remote to the P/S Terminals
Turn off power. Connect the Common (C) and Spa/High (H) wires to the P/S terminals. The Pool/Low wire is not used.
Tips / Additional Notes
- Once connected to an automation system, avoid pressing buttons on the heat pump control panel.
- Confirm the circulation pump is running and that temperature setpoints exceed current water temperature.
- Review the remote system documentation for any additional configuration steps.
