All AHN Heat Pumps and Traditional Series Heat Pumps manufactured after 2019 or equipped with the four-button controller.
Question / Problem
How do I connect a remote system to a heat pump with a four-button controller?
Warning: Only qualified personnel should install or service pool heating and automation equipment. Always turn off power to the heat pump and the remote system before working on any wiring. Do not connect any powered circuits to the FS-2 terminals. Applying voltage to the FS-2 terminals can damage the control board and is not covered by warranty.
Common Installation / Application Conditions
- The heat pump is installed and operating with the built-in four-button digital controller.
- An external automation or remote system will be used to start and stop heating.
- The remote system provides either a two-wire dry contact connection or a three-wire common and spa connection. In a three-wire connection, the pool wire from the controller is not used.
- All remote wiring is low-voltage control wiring (18-gauge minimum) routed in accordance with local electrical codes.
- Power to the heat pump and the remote automation system must be turned off before making or changing any connections.
Step-by-Step Resolution
Identify which type of remote connection you have by reviewing the documentation for the automation or remote system. Follow the corresponding set of instructions below.
Option 1: Connect a Two-Wire Remote to the Y and Z Terminals
Disconnect Power
Turn off power to the heat pump and the remote automation system at the breakers.
Connect the Wiring
Connect the two low-voltage wires from the remote system to the terminals labeled Y and Z on the heat pump microprocessor board.
Restore Power
Close the heat pump access panels and restore power to both the heat pump and the remote automation system.
Turn the Thermostats Off
Turn the pool thermostat off and turn the spa thermostat off.
Begin Control Board Configuration
Simultaneously press and hold the UP and DOWN keys until CF1 appears on the display.
Set LOC
Press the POOL/SPA key until LOC appears. Press the UP key until the display shows 50.
Set JAO
Press the POOL/SPA key until JAO appears. Press the UP key until the display shows 2, then wait.
Confirm Operation
After about 15 seconds, the water temperature will appear. The heat pump is now configured for two-wire remote operation using the Y and Z terminals.
Option 2: Connect a Three-Wire Remote to the FS-2 Terminals
In this option, only the Common (C) and Spa (H) wires from the external controller are used. The Pool wire from the controller is not used. These controllers switch the heat pump thermostats between Pool and Spa.
Disconnect Power
Turn off power to the heat pump and the remote automation system at the breakers.
Run Low-Voltage Wiring
Route 18-gauge minimum low-voltage wiring from the external controller Common (C) and Spa (H) terminals. The pool wire is not used.
Connect to FS-2
Connect the Common (C) and Spa (H) wires from the controller to the FS-2 terminals on the heat pump using female spade connectors.
Restore Power
Close the heat pump access panels and restore power to both the heat pump and the controller.
Turn on Circulation
Turn on the pool circulation pump.
Set Temperatures
Set the desired pool and spa temperature set points on the heat pump controls.
Press the UP key until the display shows 1, then wait.
Confirm Operation
After about 15 seconds, the water temperature will appear. The heat pump is now configured for three-wire remote operation using the FS-2 terminals. When the external controller selects Pool, the FS-2 circuit is open and the heat pump follows the Pool temperature setting. When the external controller selects Spa, the FS-2 circuit is closed and the heat pump follows the Spa temperature setting.
Tips / Additional Notes
- When a remote system is calling for heat, the heat pump display will show Spa mode regardless of which body is being heated.
- Refer to the remote or automation system manual for any additional configuration requirements.
- If the remote system does not start the heat pump, verify wiring connections, circulation flow and that temperature set points are above the current water temperature.
