Question / Problem
How do I install the pump-to-filter connection and verify the correct placement of the O-ring and flat seal?
Safety Warning
Warning: Turn off power to the pump at the circuit breaker and relieve system pressure before loosening or installing any fittings. A pressurized system can release water and debris forcefully.
Common Installation / Application Conditions
- The pump-to-filter connection uses both a flat seal and an O-ring, each installed in a specific location on the elbow assembly.
- Incorrect placement of the flat seal or O-ring can result in air leaks, water leaks, or improper sealing at the pump or filter inlet.
- Assemble the elbow connection to the filter inlet first to help ensure proper alignment and sealing.
Step-by-Step Resolution
-
Install the Flat Seal on the Elbow
Place the flat seal onto the end of the elbow that does not have the black adapter glued into it. Ensure the raised lip is inserted into the elbow.
-
Attach the Elbow to the Filter Inlet
Thread the end of the elbow with the flat seal onto the filter inlet and hand tighten.
-
Install the O-Ring on the Black Adapter
Place the union adapter kit O-ring into the groove of the black adapter that is glued into the elbow.
-
Connect the Elbow to the Pump
Thread the black adapter end of the elbow onto the top of the pool pump and hand tighten.
-
Verify Seal Placement
Confirm the flat seal is fully seated in the elbow and the O-ring remains fully seated in the groove on the black adapter before operating the system.
Tips
- Do not interchange the flat seal and O-ring. Each seal is designed for a specific mating surface.
- Hand tighten only. Overtightening can distort seals and cause leaks.
- Use silicone O-ring lubricant when installing O-rings and seals to help prevent pinching and ensure proper seating.
- Use the visual reference below to confirm correct placement of the flat seal and O-ring before operating the system.
