Question / Problem
How do I winterize a pool pump?
Safety Warning
Warning: Explosion hazard. Purging pool plumbing with compressed air can cause components to rupture, resulting in severe injury or death. Use only a low-pressure (below 5 PSI), high-volume blower designed for clearing pool and spa plumbing. Never use high-pressure compressed air.
Common Installation / Application Conditions
Winterizing a pool pump protects internal components from freeze damage during extended periods of non-use. This procedure is typically performed in regions with freezing temperatures or when closing a pool for the season. The pump must be fully drained, the plumbing cleared as required, and the motor kept dry throughout winter storage.
Step-by-Step Resolution
Turn Off All Power to the Pump
Shut off the circuit breaker and disable any automatic controls. Verify power is off before servicing.
Lower the Pool Water Level
Reduce the water level below all suction and return inlets to prevent water from re-entering the plumbing during winterization.
Remove the Pump Lid and Basket
Open the pump lid and remove the basket for cleaning. Ensure all debris is cleared.
Open All Pump Drain Plugs
Remove the drain plugs from the pump housing to allow all internal water to drain completely. Leave plugs out for the winter.
Ensure the Pump Is Completely Dry
Clean and dry the basket and internal areas. Confirm that no water remains inside the pump housing. Residual moisture can freeze and cause damage.
Reinstall the Pump Lid
Ensure the lid o-ring is clean, properly positioned, and lightly lubricated if recommended. Reinstall the lid securely.
Remove Any Remaining Water From Connected Plumbing
If equipped with unions, loosen them to release trapped water from suction and discharge lines. Use only low-pressure, high-volume equipment if clearing lines with air.
Protect the Pump and Motor
Keep the motor dry and covered throughout winter. If possible, remove and store the pump indoors for maximum freeze protection.
Tips / Additional Notes
- Proper winterization prevents freeze damage and ensures reliable operation when reopening the pool in the spring.
- Always verify that the pump is completely drained and dry before long-term storage.
- If assistance is needed, contact a qualified pool service technician.
