Question / Problem
How do I know if my photocontrol is compatible with LED lighting fixtures?
Installation / Application Conditions
LED lighting applications where reliable photocontrol operation is required.
Resolution
Not all photocontrols are designed to be paired with LED light fixtures. For optimal performance, it is best to install an LED-rated electronic photocontrol rather than a basic thermal photocontrol solution. In a best-case scenario, thermal photocontrols last for just 3-5 years, which means they’ll need to be replaced at least once during the lifespan of a typical LED bulb. In reality, thermal controls fail (and require maintenance) much more often than this due to damage caused by the high inrush currents in LED drivers.
The most reliable way to confirm compatibility is to review the product specification sheet. A photocontrol that is LED-ready will typically list one of the following approved load types:
- LED
- Electronic Ballast
If neither appears on the specification sheet, the photocontrol(s) may not perform correctly with LED fixtures.
Tips / Additional Notes
- Check the specification sheet for “LED” or “Electronic Ballast” load ratings.
- Avoid reusing older photocontrol(s) from incandescent or HID systems without confirming LED compatibility.
- Using an LED-compatible photocontrol(s) ensures proper operation and maximizes fixture longevity.
